What to do if you lost your Canon Software CD

November 2nd, 2006 by Antoine Khater

I don’t know if it ever happened to you, but if you lose/damage the Canon Software CD that ships with your Canon EOS DSLR getting your hands on a new one won’t be that easy unless you know someone that owns a Canon DSLR.
“Easy” you’d say “I will only download all the software from the net”, well wrong since those softwares are not available on the internet but only their updates.
Of course you can always give Canon a call and you will probably be charged for the new CD or use one of these two simple tricks.

N.B. These methods have only been tested with ZoomBrowser but I see no reason why they shouldn’t work all other Canon applications, assuming you are using Microsoft Windows.

First of all you will have to download the update of the program you want to install from Canon website.

Solution one:
1) Open the registry editor: Start=>Run=>Regedit
2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\
3) if not already created, create a new key called Canon
4) Inside that new key create an additional one called ZoomBrowser Ex1
5) Run the ZoomBrowser updater you had previously downloaded, it should now pass the check status and install correctly

Solution Two:
1) Using a software like winrar extract the executable file you had previously downloaded to folder X
2) Navigate to X\INSTALL\COMMON\
3) Run the Install.exe you find in that folder
and the program should get installed with no problems

List of registry keys of different Canon Softwares to be used with solution one
Zoom Browser: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\ZoomBrowser Ex

Digital Photo Professional: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\DPP
EOS Capture: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOS Capture
EOS File Viewer: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOSViewerUtility
PhotoStitch: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\PhotoStitch

For the latest EOS capture (v2.x).
Just select the text below and paste it into a new notepad file. Save the file as EOSCAPTURE.REG then run.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOS Capture]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOSViewerUtility]

    Vista solution…

…One just needs to execute the downloaded file ‘k7a06enx.exe’ (DPP 3.2), monitor the temp folder (while executing) and copy the extracted folder (C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp\CanonUPW_000) to another location. Cancel the original installation of ‘k7a06enx.exe’, and run ‘\INST\INSTALL\COMMON\Install.exe’ to install DPP 3.2 without having to have a previous version installed. Worked for me!

Super Hack. I tried the Anon solution on XP and it works fine. There is a 2.CAB file in root directory (23MB) which doesn’t seem to be needed for the installation.

I presume that DPP can not be made portable (i.e. run from USB stick, without having to have administrative privileges to install it)? If not, what else can be erased to make the installation files bundle leaner?
