What to do if you lost your Canon Software CD

I don’t know if it ever happened to you, but if you lose/damage the Canon Software CD that ships with your Canon EOS DSLR getting your hands on a new one won’t be that easy unless you know someone that owns a Canon DSLR.
“Easy” you’d say “I will only download all the software from the net”, well wrong since those softwares are not available on the internet but only their updates.
Of course you can always give Canon a call and you will probably be charged for the new CD or use one of these two simple tricks.

N.B. These methods have only been tested with ZoomBrowser but I see no reason why they shouldn’t work all other Canon applications, assuming you are using Microsoft Windows.

First of all you will have to download the update of the program you want to install from Canon website.

Solution one:
1) Open the registry editor: Start=>Run=>Regedit
2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\
3) if not already created, create a new key called Canon
4) Inside that new key create an additional one called ZoomBrowser Exfor the key to be created for other programs please check the end of this post
5) Run the ZoomBrowser updater you had previously downloaded, it should now pass the check status and install correctly

Solution Two:
1) Using a software like winrar extract the executable file you had previously downloaded to folder X
2) Navigate to X\INSTALL\COMMON\
3) Run the Install.exe you find in that folder
and the program should get installed with no problems

List of registry keys of different Canon Softwares to be used with solution one
Zoom Browser: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\ZoomBrowser Ex

Digital Photo Professional: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\DPP
EOS Capture: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOS Capture
EOS File Viewer: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOSViewerUtility
PhotoStitch: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\PhotoStitch

The Mac trick works but does not apply to version 3.8.2 (There is no update.plist file)
I installed 3.2.0 first by using the trick. And update to 3.8.2. Hope it will help :)

After a little playing around.... on Windows 7 64-Bit the keys required to run all my updaters were:

    Zoom Browser 6.5.1 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\ZoomBrowser EX\Install

    Digital Photo Pro 3.8
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\DPP

    EOS Utility 2.8.1
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\EOS Utility

    Picture Style Editor
no key needed, but here it is:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\Picture Style Editor
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\PictureStyleEditor

    Cheers

    @Atul,

All you need to do on OSX:

    1. mount the .dmg and drag the updater within it to your desktop.
    2. right-click on the updater and “Show Package Contents”
    3. navigate to Contents>Resources and delete the “update.plist” file.
    4. now, double click the Updater you dragged to the desktop in step 2 and it will install.

    Perfect for a Mac!
  • Sudhakaran
    Man, You rock!

Awesome, the registry entry works for 6.4.1 on windows XP

    Thank you soo much
  • pbowles
YEAHH!!!! The 1st solution (registry hack) was the answer!!!! If YOU are needing this, don't forget the 'Install' key for 6.3.1 (see Driver's post on March 6, 2009) . Update ver. 6.4.1 is out now... I didn't have the guts/time to see if IT works w/ the hack. Thanks so much!!!
  • costinel
    doesn't work for DPP 3.7 - only 3.6.x is downloaded :(
  • T4nu
    @costinel,
Just download DPP3.7.2 and install it on XP SP3 using the registry edit, it works without problem.
    Thanks for the trick
  • hkfirat
    thanx for trick.
  • pterik

If anyone is still looking, I found this site: http://www.foto-freeware.de/zoombrowser.php

It's in German but you can still download and install in English if you wish. It is the 2.2 version. Once d/l and installed though you can go to the canon website, d/l the updater and install that. Works perfectly.
  • Alicia
It won't work for me...tried it 5 times?? What am I doing wrong?
  • @Alicia, what did you try ? what version are you using? are you on windows ?
  • Windows 7 x64

Here's the CANON.REG file you need for Windows 7 64bit:
    -----------cut----------------

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\CameraWindow]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\EOS Utility]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\EOSViewerUtility]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\FileViewerUtility]

Vista fix (by Anon on Dec 10, 2007 - 12:12:50) works beautifully on Windows 7 as well.
  • And for those having trouble with ZB, check the comments above!

    @Driver posted the fix:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\ZoomBrowser EX\Install]
    needs to be present

    It works for 6.3.1
  • @Will, putting the tag in the "Install" key under ZoomBrowser EX did the trick, thank you!
  • Works every time, thanks
  • Doug
RegEdit hack no longer working for XP with ZoomBrowser 6.31 Updater :(
  • Fantastic - you're a genius! Why can't Canon make all this simpler!
  • Ovidiu
    Thanks man! Excellent!
It worked for EOS Utility, didn't work for ZoomBrowser in my case (the Registry trick). I'll keep trying though :-)
  • nickoury
Solution One works perfectly, so simple, so easy, AMAZING.

    THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH.

    YOU ARE THE ABSOLUTE BEST.
  • you absolute legend! I needed this, best solution!
  • Lou
The registry technique no longer works as of today... Worked a month or two ago.

The extraction technique doesn't work too well. files come out odd.
  • Jerry
Thanks man....it's really work....great and usefull tip...!!!
  • RobV
Great post! Lost my Photostitch app when upgrading PC and cannot find the original CD :-( .... Two minutes after reading this and I'm up and running! Thanks!
  • NeilBuk
Brill! Option 1 worked for me in Vista for both Zoombrowser and photostitch. Seems so simple when you know how! Much obliged.
  • Dan
    Worked like a charm!

    Daniel
  • Driver
Since the newest version you should add new key to get it work!

Here is a new reg file:

    =========== ZoomBrowser EX Updater 6.2.1c.reg ===========

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\ZoomBrowser EX\Install]

    =============================================
  • @Driver, Thank you sir! Just fixed my situation!
  • Jim
Thanks. I got lucky. This was the first site I opened looking for a way to get the software loaded.
  • It works!
I thought i would have to tear my storage for a little cd.

    Thanks guys.
  • Me
Kool! Works like a charm. Thanks!
  • Jack Thelad
You're a genius. Two thumbs up for an awesome tip !!!
    (worked a charm)
  • PMK
    Found this over Torrent :)
Just create .reg File with this:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\DPP]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOS Capture]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOS Utility]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOSViewerUtility]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\PhotoStitch]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\ZoomBrowser Ex]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\ZoomBrowser Ex\Task Categories]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\ZoomBrowser Ex\Task Categories\Camera]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\ZoomBrowser Ex\Task]
  • MIchaelK
Thank you so much..i spent ages looking for this.
  • Alireza
Thank you for your kindness. The solution did work well .
  • Jurrel
You my friend are a king!
thank you a million times over :)
  • Sheldon
This registry edit has worked for me on two machines. 1 in XP and the other in Vista32. And for both ZB and PS. Mucho grassy ass!
  • Dia
Thank you! The registry edit using the EOS Utility key worked wonders.

Finally I can download my photos!
  • Antonio
Perdón, la clave correcta para EOS Utility ha sido:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOS Utility

    ----

Sorry, the correct key for EOS Utility was:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOS Utility
  • Antonio
La solución 1 me ha funcionado perfectamente para instalar EOS Utility en Windows Vista 32 bits, sencillamente creando la clave siguiente:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOS Capture

    ¡Muchísimas gracias!

    ---

Solution 1 has worked OK to install EOS Utility in Windows Vista 32 bits, simply by creating the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOS Capture

    Thanks a lot!
  • james
worked straight away for PhotoStitch. i have been looking for days for a way to reinstall it without the CD!!
  • Geert
    Solution one:
    1) Open the registry editor: Start=>Run=>Regedit
    2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\
    3) if not already created, create a new key called Canon
    4) Inside that new key create an additional one called ZoomBrowser Ex1
    5) Run the ZoomBrowser updater you had previously downloaded, it should now pass the check status and install correctly

---> This works on Vista 32 bit. Many thanks!
  • fredo
    Works great!, thanks!
  • jr
I have windows vista and the registry trick makes it unpack zoombrowser but it comes back with a error Zoombrowser EX not found install zoombrowser ex before launching this setup program. I dont understand Anon above any help
  • Regedit worked for me on PhotoStitch. Just create a new key called PhotoStitch, it can be totally empty, then run the PhotoStitch updater and it works just fine.
  • Alberto
Compliments ......... The first solution is GOOD
  • Super Hack. I tried the Anon solution on XP and it works fine. There is a 2.CAB file in root directory (23MB) which doesn't seem to be needed for the installation.

I presume that DPP can not be made portable (i.e. run from USB stick, without having to have administrative privileges to install it)? If not, what else can be erased to make the installation files bundle leaner?
  • h lavender
    This is awesome! Thanks much.
  • Frank
    This hack ROCKS!!!
  • Andrew
Legend - this has been annoying the hell out of me for ages - I don't WANT all the other Canon crap installed, just Photostitch... :)
  • toxin
Thank you!!! Search my fingers blood red until I found this site. Worked 100%, even for Vista.
  • Anon
    Vista solution...

...One just needs to execute the downloaded file 'k7a06enx.exe' (DPP 3.2), monitor the temp folder (while executing) and copy the extracted folder (C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp\CanonUPW_000) to another location. Cancel the original installation of 'k7a06enx.exe', and run '\INST\INSTALL\COMMON\Install.exe' to install DPP 3.2 without having to have a previous version installed. Worked for me!
  • Hyb thanks for the info I will update the post accordingly
  • Hyb
The extract trick no longer works with the latest update packages. Registry key works a treat though, thanks.
  • sudip
    hi,

it worked with me too, but pitty that i cant see the image real time on pc, i have to click to see.

  • chris
Big Thx registry trick works with DPP V3.0.2.

But you can´t use Winrar (or WinZip) to extract that folder structure... (maybe they fixed this)
  • woolly
    regedit worked for me too!!!
    thanks
  • Rose
Hey...that registry thing worked :) Thank you!!
  • Dan
For the latest EOS capture (v2.x).
Just select the text below and paste it into a new notepad file. Save the file as EOSCAPTURE.REG then run.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOS Capture]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOSViewerUtility]
  • Letheus
Yeah! that regedit thing worked=D haha
