What to do if you lost your Canon Software CD

I don’t know if it ever happened to you, but if you lose/damage the Canon Software CD that ships with your Canon EOS DSLR getting your hands on a new one won’t be that easy unless you know someone that owns a Canon DSLR.
“Easy” you’d say “I will only download all the software from the net”, well wrong since those softwares are not available on the internet but only their updates.
Of course you can always give Canon a call and you will probably be charged for the new CD or use one of these two simple tricks for both Windows and OSX

Workaround for Windows

First of all you will have to download the update of the program you want to install from Canon website.

Solution one:
1) Open the registry editor: Start=>Run=>Regedit
3) if not already created, create a new key called Canon
4) Inside that new key create an additional one called ZoomBrowser Exfor the key to be created for other programs please check the end of this post
5) Run the ZoomBrowser updater you had previously downloaded, it should now pass the check status and install correctly

List of registry keys of different Canon Softwares to be used with solution one
Zoom Browser: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\ZoomBrowser Ex

Digital Photo Professional: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\DPP
PhotoStitch: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\PhotoStitch

From the suggestions in the comment this post is being updated. You can follow these links for how to do it manually:

For your convenience, we compiled those registry files for you. Just download and merge the file corresponding to your OS by double clicking on it.

Workaround for OSX

For MAC OSX based on a reader comment from Brian comment-51446585 all you need to do on OSX is:

  1. mount the .dmg and drag the updater within it to your desktop.
  2. right-click on the updater and “Show Package Contents”
  3. navigate to Contents>Resources and delete the “update.plist” file.
  4. now, double click the Updater you dragged to the desktop in step 2 and it will install.

You are using this information at your own risks, I provide no warranty whatsoever and messing around with your registries can be fatal to your computer.

How the hell you supposed to extract with winrar a .exe file? What are you smokin?

    • Rob-k

winrar can create a self extracting exe …. the new versions however are not winrar compatible …. this post is 4 years old. The registry edits work perfectly though

  • Rob-k

For Windows 7 – 64bit you need to paste in the following into Notepad and save as CanonUpdate.reg and then run the reg file:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

After sucessfully installing the reg file, run the updater file and it will install.  Took me ages to find this – as I was missing some of the reg entries, coz I’m running Windows 7 64 bit.

with zoom browser you need to create this
    reg key

  • Pier

amazing. thank u. for simply use…

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARECanonZoomBrowser ExTask Categories]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARECanonZoomBrowser ExTask CategoriesCamera]

copy and paste into notepad and save any file as .reg then double click. Works for me WIN 7 X64 BIT.

downloaded the file, created the reg files but when I go to install, my computer is still asking me for a disk? what am I doing wrong? I now have Windows 8 so I don’t know if its something new there (as it seems as though they have changed everything with windows 8).
