I am nearing 70k pictures in my Lightroom catalog and it is growing up steadily, I am very reluctant in splitting to many catalogs because I like the idea to be able to search for all my pictures in on single place.

So how big is your catalog ? Any idea what is the performance limit of Adobe Lightroom 2.x catalogs ?

I have read it is much better than the 1.x version but I am looking for real life experience.

A long time adidap reader and friend MIR is interested to know how far would a photographer go or how much would you risk to take a picture.

So if trapped in a hurricane, fire, war or other risky situation would you first think of fleeing away or grab some picture first?

Have you already faced this choice?

What would make you run? what would make you stand and shoot? is it the money? fame? sharing and transmitting the "moment" that otherwise would be lost ? …

For me it is probably that I’ve learned to handhold the ND filter in front of the polarizers instead of using a filter holder for wide angle shots.

I’ve bee struggling with vignetting caused by the filter holder when coupled with a polarizer on my tokina 12-24 and then fellow photographer in DPReview suggest I should simply drop the filter holder and handhold the filter in front of the lens instead.

The idea sounded pretty crazy for me at first but with some practice it is rather easy, I’ve taken shots like that as long as 1 min exposure with virtually no shake.

Ok granted it is not practical if you like to have a hot chocolate while waiting for your shot but it is the best solution I’ve found so far.

So what’s your tip for 2008 ?

The surprise is not that 76% of readers are not color blinded but that 100% of colors blinded who answered this poll shoot in colors.

In fact out of the 108 votes we got 24 people who contributed are color blinded and they all shoot in color.

The poll got about 150 votes 45% of which were not really concerned about seeing their pictures stolen and 38% admitting their were afraid of copyright violation.

What is also interesting is that among the people that voted “I am paranoiac” some used to share their work under the creative common license but changed their minds after experiencing abuse of their work.

Other conclusions

  • 81% of the pros who voted are paranoiac
  • 90% of the amateurs who voted are not
  • “No and I’m not a pro” was 40% of all votes
  • 9 people said they don’t really understand licensing

I am not trying to judge anyone here, I totally understand why someone would not want his pictures used without previous permission however I am just trying to find out if their is a whatsoever relation between watermarking/protecting and being a pro. i.e. if most people trying to protect their work actually make a living from photography.

I am interested to know how do you name your pictures ! I know for instance some people call a picture depending on the location it was taken at, others with a serial number etc…

I personally tend to give a unique name to each picture just like a child would do with a him favorite toy, I feel it is much more “personal”! Names I choose are usually out of my state of mind when I was shooting or post processing.

Share your experience and thoughts with me on that !
